Dr. Fernandez is a board certified, advanced laparoscopic general surgeon with extensive experience in bariatric surgery. For more than 21 years, he has been in private practice in the Tampa Bay area, where he has performed more than 500 laparoscopic bariatric procedures.

A National Proctor/Preceptor for Bariatric Surgery for Ethicon Surgical Corporation, Dr. Fernandez has received numerous awards throughout his career and given many presentations in the field of general and bariatric surgery. He has a proven track record in weight loss surgery, with a program under his medical leadership earning the Centers of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery designation by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) together with the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC).

Education

He earned his medical doctorate from the prestigious Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Urena in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1981, after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Miami in 1976. Dr. Fernandez completed specialized training at the privately owned Alton Oschner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, completing his residency program with top honors in 1986.

Personal

Dr. Fernandez is married and has five children. He enjoys fishing as much as he enjoys performing surgery, with weight loss surgery being the specialty area he has found to be most professionally rewarding.
